About Hemslöjd

About Us - The Hemslöjd story... - Lite Om Oss - Hemslöjd

"Hemslöjd" is Swedish for handicraft. Throughout Sweden you'll find small hemslöjd shops where crafts of wood, textile and other materials are made and sold. Our company, Hemslöjd, Inc., carries on this tradition of handcrafted items made in the Swedish style. The personalized wooden Dala horse signs, decorative plates, door harps and etched beverage ware produced in the workshop are available in our gift shop, mail order catalog department and online store.

You'll find our Hemslöjd gift shop, workshop and catalog office in downtown Lindsborg, Kansas, a cosmopolitan prairie town known as "Little Sweden, USA." Our building was formerly a produce market, the bus station, a repair shop and, most recently, a filling station. In 1984, the garage was cleaned up, the gas pumps and tanks were removed and 201 North Main Street was transformed into a bright and friendly experience for visitors to our little Swedish-American town.

Lindsborg's rich Swedish heritage is reflected in the town’s character. Located in central Kansas, Lindsborg has a charming Old World atmosphere. You'll enjoy the unique shops and restaurants, art galleries and working artist studios, museums and interesting places to stay. Midsummer's Day Festival, Lucia Fest, Svensk Hyllningsfest, the Messiah Festival of Music and Art, and even Waffeldagen are among the special ethnic and cultural events celebrated in Lindsborg.

Today, we are considered one of the leading Swedish gift catalog and websites in the US -- and maybe in the world. During November and December hundreds of catalog and online orders are shipped daily. In 2007, Hemslöjd was recognized as the #1 importer worldwide of traditional Dala horses by Nils Olsson Dala Horse Factory, in Sweden, one of the world’s largest producers of Dala horses. Our gift shop in Lindsborg offers an even larger array of Scandinavian crafts and gifts.

In our gift shop, you are invited to watch the craftsmen and local folk artists at work in our workshop. Our artists are creating and decorating Monday through Saturday each week. In addition to the Scandinavian experience, the Hemslöjd rents four-wheeled cycles to allow visitors a fun way to tour beautiful Lindsborg.

Our store in downtown Lindsborg is open daily all year, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, when we are closed. Hours: Monday - Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sunday noon to 4 p.m. The gift shop may close early on major holidays. The phone number for our Lindsborg gift shop is 785-227-2053.
