Father's
Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in November. Modeled
on Mother's Day, this festival has spread from Sweden to the other
Nordic countries. Commercial interests have been the driving
force behind this festivity, from the beginning, and the Father's
Day gift is a prominent feature of its observance. The
schools also had a hand in promoting its institution, and
schoolchildren were encouraged to make drawings and small gifts
for the occasion. Nowadays, Father is offered breakfast in
bed, a special cake, and a present. Father very often
receives a tie on Father's Day, and this "compulsory"
item has become something of a joke in many families.
